Sampuranta Divas remembers the completion in 1604 of the Adi Granth, the scripture that became Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Sampuranta means completeness. The day comes shortly before the Pehla Prakash Purab, when the finished Granth was installed at Sri Harmandir Sahib.

Ramsar

To compile the Granth, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji withdrew to a quiet place outside Amritsar, beside a pool now called Ramsar, and worked there for about a year. Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib marks the place. The Guru gathered the bani of the first four Gurus, much of it from the pothis kept at Goindwal by the family of Sri Guru Amar Das Ji, which Baba Mohan Ji, the third Guru's son, was persuaded to give. He added his own bani, and the compositions of fifteen Bhagats, among them Kabir, Ravidas, Namdev and Sheikh Farid, and of Bhatts and Sikhs of the Guru's court.

Written by Bhai Gurdas Ji

The Guru dictated and Bhai Gurdas Ji, the learned Sikh who was also the Guru's maternal uncle, wrote it out. The bani was arranged with great care, by raag, the musical measure in which it is sung, and within each raag by author and form. At its head stands the Mool Mantar and Japji Sahib.

Completion and installation

When the work was finished, it was carried in procession to Sri Harmandir Sahib and installed, with Baba Budha Ji as the first granthi. A century later, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji added the bani of the ninth Guru and gave the Granth the Guruship. Read about the Pehla Prakash Purab.
